They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Well, the same holds true for your LinkedIn profile. Adding media to your profile is an effective way to engage your visitors and make your profile stand out.
Here’s what you need to know.
Overview
Featured Media is a standalone section on LinkedIn (near the top of your profile, just below About).
This section is uniquely where you’re able to upload files (images, presentations, documents) and links (videos, articles, websites) to your profile.
In addition to uploading external files, you can also highlight your LinkedIn activity. This refers specifically to things like posts, newsletters, and articles that you’ve published on the platform.
Below is a screenshot of the different options for your featured media section.

Adding a Post
Adding a post to your Featured Media on LinkedIn is beneficial for a couple reasons.
First, it enhances the visibility of your original post. So, if you created a post that was particularly insightful or popular, adding it to your Featured Media is a great way to ensure it continues to be seen.
Second, it allows you to showcase the things you care about. So, if you created a post about a particular industry or occupation, featuring it can reflect positively on you and enhance your professional image.
Adding a Newsletter
Did you know LinkedIn offers built-in newsletter functionality? That’s right. You’re able to create and distribute a newsletter directly on LinkedIn to share insights into your particular industry or occupation.
If you’ve published a newsletter on LinkedIn, adding it to your Featured Media is a no brainer. It’s a great way to increase exposure to your newsletter, get new subscribers, and demonstrate your interests.
Adding an Article
Similar to LinkedIn’s newsletter functionality, you’re also able to publish articles directly on the platform. That means you don’t need your own blog or website in order to produce long-form articles.
Highlighting articles you’ve written as Featured Media is a great way to demonstrate your thought leadership. As a byproduct, that helps position you as a subject matter expert in whatever you’re writing about.
Adding a Link
In addition to the aforementioned, you may also add external links (URLs) as Featured Media on your LinkedIn profile (such as videos, articles, or websites).
Adding links allows you to showcase content from across the internet, whether it’s a link to a project you worked on, a podcast you were interviewed on, or a website that highlights your expertise.

Adding Media
Lastly, you may add media like pictures, presentations, or documents to your Featured Media on LinkedIn.
For instance, an important presentation you delivered, an impressive PDF file, or images from a key project can all be featured to visually highlight your expertise and accomplishments.
LinkedIn allows you to upload a variety of file types in the Featured Media section including:
Documents:
- PDF (.pdf)
- Microsoft Word (.doc, .docx)
- PowerPoint (.ppt, .pptx)
- OpenOffice (.odt)
Images:
- JPEG (.jpg, .jpeg)
- PNG (.png)
- GIF (.gif)
Videos:
- MP4 (.mp4)
- MOV (.mov)
Adding a Description
When you upload Featured Media on LinkedIn, there’s a section for including a written description.
While descriptions aren’t required – they’re certainly recommended. A well-crafted description goes a long way towards communicating the context or significance of the subject matter.
In Conclusion
In conclusion, I hope this article helps you understand what Featured Media is (and why it’s a good idea). For a live example, come see my LinkedIn profile which has a dozen different Featured Media items.
